Trick 2 / 5

The [%] next to the ingredient

When an ingredient appears in the product’s name, or the front of the pack highlights it in words or pictures, the brand is, as a rule, required to say how much of it the product contains. On this pack, the ingredient is “Peito de peru” (turkey breast). Look for the percentage next to it on the ingredients list, or beside the product name.

Usually, but not always: the law makes exceptions.

Seen in an online shop Two packs of sliced turkey. One is 60% turkey, the other 93%. What makes up the rest? It’s on the list.

And what’s left?

  • 93% turkey

    7% for everything else.

  • 60% turkey

    40% for everything else.

Both lists are long. The difference is how much room is left for what isn’t turkey.

If an ingredient caught your eye, look for its %: on the list, or next to the product name.

This guide teaches you to read and compare labels. It does not say a food is good or bad, and it does not replace advice from a dietitian. The right choice depends on the product as a whole, on how much you eat, how often, and on you.
